Encourage My Overwhelmed Soul
Have you ever been truly overwhelmed? I'm not talking about day-to-day stresses. I'm talking about the moments when life roundhouse kicks you in the stomach and you're left wondering how you're going to manage to simply start breathing again.
To date, I have been truly overwhelmed six times in my life. These moments have come as I fought to face my own sin, deal with the wounds left by the sin of those I love most and simply cope with the tragedies of life. Regardless of the cause of these moments, they each took me by surprise and left me feeling completely vulnerable and stranded in the middle of a turbulent storm. Can you relate to any of this? How do you cope when you've been robbed of control and certainty? I've found that when I'm overwhelmed, I go into autopilot and race to the only place I know to be safe; the shower.
No matter where I am, be it a motel in South Africa, my sophomore dormitory or my apartment, when I am truly overwhelmed, I get in the shower and sing The Storm is Passing Over. Most recently, I didn't even realize how out of control I felt in my situation until I hopped in the shower for no reason and started singing. In this place I am immediately reminded that God is bigger than the storm. Belting these lyrics at the top of my lungs, I feel God cradling me in His arms and rocking me softly until I feel his peace.
Again this may be really silly to most of you, but I cherish the closeness I feel with God in the scariest of times and just wanted to share with you guys! Below, I wrote out the lyrics to the song and a few scriptures that I cling to once I'm calm enough to once again face the world outside of my shower. How do you find peace when facing your biggest storms?
Encourage my soul
And let us journey on
For the night is dark
And I am far from home
Thanks be to God
The morning light appears
The storm is passing over, the storm is passing over.
The storm is passing over, hallelujah!
